Origins
and Expansion
LOBO
& IBEAS was founded in 1974. The founding partners’
professional relationship, however, started long before,
in 1960, when they worked together in the legal and financial
structuring of the MBR Project for the Caemi Group, then
controlled by the businessman Augusto Trajano de Azevedo
Antunes. This was the major private project in Brazil at
the time, pioneer in the field of project finance, and required
the conception of a sophisticated corporate and contractual
structure for the implementation of one of the world’s
largest iron ore mines, a maritime port and a railroad.
LOBO
& IBEAS’ team has since been involved
in major business projects, in multiple sectors of the economy.
Its nucleus, formed in the sixties, has grown and diversified,
and now comprises offices in Rio de Janeiro and São
Paulo, with strong presence throughout the national territory
and in international transactions. The business legal practice,
both in the litigation and consulting areas, initially focused
on corporate, finance, international, tax and mining law,
expanded in line with the rapidly growing Brazilian economy
and the needs of clients in many other specializations.
LOBO & IBEAS has also a strong international
presence, in cooperation with some of the world’s
leading international law firms.
Qualification of Lawyers
In LOBO & IBEAS every policy
is conceived to ensure that its clients receive the most
effective defense of their interests and therefore the Firm
pays great attention to the selection and professional qualification
of its trainees and young lawyers. It is the Firm’s
policy to hire trainees and recently graduated lawyers only,
so that they complete their professional qualification in-house,
becoming integrated with the Firm’s culture until
they are qualified to become partners. Because of this policy,
the Firm’s growth process has been gradual and carefully
supervised in order to protect its differential –
the quality of the services it provides to its clients.
Once
admitted to the team, the Firm’s young professionals
are permanently supervised by more experienced lawyers and
are also encouraged, on an ongoing basis, to pursue technical
improvement, by attending graduate courses and specialization
programs.
A
significant number of the Firm’s lawyers have concluded
or are attending graduate programs at renowned institutions
in Brazil and abroad, such as the Universities of Harvard,
Michigan and Illinois, in the United States, the University
of Paris, in France, and, in Brazil, Universidade de São
Paulo – USP, Universidade do Rio de Janeiro –
UERJ and São Paulo’s Pontifícia Universidade
Católica - PUC. Many of our lawyers lecture at Brazil’s
leading academic institutions, such as Fundação
Getulio Vargas and Rio de Janeiro’s PUC.
Versatility
and Team Work
LOBO
& IBEAS has lawyers who are specialized in
all main areas of business law, with extensive experience
in their fields. None of its lawyers, however, works exclusively
in a single area of specialization. It is the Firm’s
belief that a frequent contact with other areas of law,
besides those of their specialization, confers upon the
lawyers the versatility and flexibility they need to render
the best advice to their clients.
A
number of lawyers at LOBO & IBEAS,
who are currently more involved in preventive consulting
activities, work or have worked in litigation proceedings.
This stems from another of the philosophies that distinguish
the Firm, the belief that participation in judicial disputes
gives the lawyers a sensitivity that has proven extremely
valuable when rendering preventive advice to clients in
the negotiation of contracts or associations.
The
formation of an effective team of professionals to act in
each case is another main concern of LOBO &
IBEAS. There are no closed and pre-established
working groups. Teams are formed by the partners and other
lawyers with the necessary experience and knowledge to meet
the requirements of each case, and the lawyers always act
under the supervision of at least one partner.
Another
feature that differentiates LOBO & IBEAS’
culture is the fact that all clients and cases are ascribed
to the Firm as a whole, with no special impact on the remuneration
of the lawyers who referred or brought the client or worked
in the case. At Lobo & Ibeas everyone benefits from
the overall profit of the Firm, which ensures that when
receiving a case, lawyers are motivated to involve those
of their colleagues who are most qualified to act in the
matter.
These
are some of the values nurtured by the Firm, that have contributed
to a growing client portfolio of over 1.000 national and
foreign enterprises, including leading organizations in
diverse business sectors.
